"Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going." - Noam Shpancer,

‘Manodarpan’ is an initiative of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI), under the ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ aims to provide psychosocial support to students, teachers and families for mental health and emotional well-being. Mental Health Week is a vital initiative that promotes awareness and understanding of mental health issues among our students and the wider school community. This year, our school organized a series of activities focusing on mindfulness, creating a "Happiness Zone," meditation sessions, nukkad natak, breathing sessions, slogan writing and many more performances to encourage positive mental health practices and conversations to celebrate Mental Health Week. A brief on the activities is as follows:

Mindful Eating Activity: Nursery and KG

  • During Mental Health Week, our school organized a mindful eating workshop for Nursery and KG class students. Students and staff were encouraged to slow down and savour their meals. The workshop emphasized the importance of paying attention to the sensory experience of eating, paying attention to taste, texture, and smell to promote mindfulness of present and a healthier relationship with food.

Breathing Exercise: Grade I and II

  • The session conducted for Grade I and II students on breathing exercises was a valuable and age-appropriate introduction to the significance of mental well-being. The session provided a safe and engaging space for young learners to understand the connection between their breath and emotions. Through fun and interactive activities like deep belly breathing and mindful breathing exercises, the students learned practical techniques to manage stress, calm their minds, and improve their emotional resilience. This session not only laid a foundation for promoting mental health awareness from an early age but also equipped the students with simple yet effective tools to navigate the challenges they may encounter in their young lives, fostering a healthier and more balanced approach to emotional well-being.

Nukkad Natak (Hindi Play): Grade III

  • To raise awareness about mental health issues and promote destigmatization, students of class III performed a nukkad natak. The play addressed common misconceptions about mental health and encouraged open conversations. It was performed in the school ground area of the school, allowing the entire school community to witness and engage in the dialogue.

Gratitude Journaling Activity: Grade IV and V

  • To cultivate a sense of gratitude and encourage positive thinking, students of class IV and V were provided a session on gratitude journals. Each day, they were encouraged to write down three things they were thankful for. This simple practice helped students focus on the positive aspects of their lives and encouraged a mindset of gratitude. Later teachers were asked to discuss the significance of this activity and encourage them to follow this as a part of their daily routine.

The Happiness Zone: Grade: VI & VII

  • The school organized a “Happiness Zone Activity” for the students of Class VI & VII on 9 October, 2023. We created a dedicated "Happiness Zone" in our school where students could relax, unwind, and recharge during breaks. This area featured comfortable seating, soothing music, and happiness zone vibrations. The aim was to provide a stress-free environment and encourage students to take short breaks to rejuvenate their minds. Four students from each section volunteered to perform and gave it their all. The students spread happiness by demonstrating plethora of activities like laughing songs, jokes, poem, role plays and funny enactments leaving everyone giggle with joy. They also gave an insight of how mental health and happiness are intrinsically linked and educated their fellows on how one can be happy in odd situations. They created an aura of merriment with their “infectious laughter”.

Five Senses Mindfulness Exercise: Grade: VIII

  • To promote self-awareness and mindfulness through sensory experiences, a five senses mindfulness exercise was conducted during the week for students of class VIII. Students were guided through a meditation where they focused on each of their five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. This exercise helped students become more aware of their surroundings and their own bodies, reducing stress and increasing self-awareness.

Poster Making Activity: Grade: IX

  • To encourage creativity and expressiveness while promoting mental health awareness, a poster-making activity was organized for class IX, allowing students to express their thoughts on mental health. The winning posters were displayed throughout the school, creating an environment that promoted mental health awareness.

Meditation: Grade: X and XII

  • Mindfulness is a powerful tool for managing stress and enhancing overall well-being. To celebrate this mental health week, different mindfulness activities were planned for class X and XII students. These sessions included guided breathing exercises, mindful eating, meditation, and awareness-building activities. Students learned how to stay present in the moment, reduce anxiety, and improve concentration.

Slogan Writing: Grade: XI

  • The Slogan Writing Competition for Class XI on Mental Health and Depression, held on Oct 9, 2023, witnessed creative brilliance. The prevailing theme, "Making mental health and well-being for all a global priority," inspired thought-provoking slogans. Students eloquently conveyed the essence of prioritizing mental health in succinct phrases. The event served as a platform for raising awareness and fostering dialogue around the crucial topic. The insightful slogans reflected the students' commitment to advocating for mental well-being.

Mental Health Week was a resounding success, fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere within our school community. The activities centred on mindfulness, the Happiness Zone, Meditation, and the Nukkad Natak not only raised awareness about mental health but also equipped our students with practical tools to enhance their emotional well-being. These initiatives will continue to play a significant role in nurturing a mentally healthy school environment.

We are committed to maintaining the momentum generated during Mental Health Week and ensuring that the lessons learned and practices adopted continue to benefit our students' mental health and overall happiness.
